Twisty bread on the fire
Wrap a snake of dough round a green stick and bake it over the embers. Simple dough, a long wait, and the best bread anyone has ever eaten.
How it goes
- Mix the dough before or during the session: flour, a pinch of salt, water, a spoon of oil.
- Each child rolls a long snake of dough and winds it in a spiral round the end of a green stick.
- Wait for glowing embers rather than flames.
- Toast slowly, turning, kneeling outside the fire circle log.
- It's done when it sounds hollow when tapped. Pull it off the stick, cool it, and add jam or honey.
