Natural paintbrushes

Tie grass, feathers, pine needles or moss onto sticks and see what marks each one makes.

How it goes

  1. Collect a stick for each brush and a selection of brush heads: grass, pine needles, feathers, moss, leaves.
  2. Bind each head to its stick with an elastic band or wool.
  3. Paint with mud, watered-down paint or berries crushed in water.
  4. Compare the marks: which brush makes dots, lines, splats?
  5. Make a group painting using every brush.
