Sit spots and sound maps

NatureAll agesWellbeingIndependence

Five minutes alone (in sight) with a card and a crayon: you are the X, mark every sound around you. The simplest mindfulness practice in the woods, and it works on every age.

How it goes

  1. Model it first: eyes closed, point to a sound, mark it on the demo card.
  2. Each child picks a sit spot within the boundary — apart, but in sight.
  3. Five silent minutes: X in the middle is you; each sound becomes a mark where it came from.
  4. Regroup and compare: who heard the woodpecker? What was the furthest sound?
  5. Repeat across the seasons at the same spots — the maps change with the leaves.
