Knot race relays

Ropes & knotsGamesKS2 (7–11)11+ResilienceConfidence

Clove hitch, figure-of-eight, reef knot — taught once, then raced: first team to tie the course wins. Repetition without anyone noticing they're practising.

How it goes

  1. Teach the three knots at stations, one at a time, everyone ties each twice.
  2. Set the relay: run to the post (clove hitch), the loop (figure-of-eight), the join (reef knot).
  3. Race in teams; a leader checks each knot before the runner tags on.
  4. Rerun with roles swapped so every child ties every knot under (friendly) pressure.

Kit

  • Short ropes (one per child)
  • Posts or trees as stations
